@GwenBriar -- I think the car could have been some sort of Gold with a black Roof. I used the tires as a reference for grey and although resolution is pretty low I suppose greens and reds have been lost in the process of ageing and scanning, thus it's too blue. But instead of lowering blue, you should increase red and green. Look at the Mercedes Benz up the road, it might have been black -- another great reference for neutral grey.

@GwenBriar - the new version is much better than the first one. However, I think the green is missing by now. The trees turned greyish, and the car isn't gold but silver by now. Retouching old film is always a tricky thing, because there's no way to get back color which has disappeared over time. Just for your workflow: If the scans are 8 bit only, make them 16 bit in a wider colorspace, such as Lab, to not clip colors which are already on the verge. Some tools won't work in Photoshop when you're working in Lab, but all things color are way easier to deal with. And if you don't like Lab, use f.e. PhotoRGB for a much wider gamut.

The Yosemite Falls could need a second run, too. As we humans don't have "absolute color sight" I let most of my stuff rest for at least two days before doing the final touch up -- one needs distance to see things more objective after hours of adjusting details. And looking at the retouch with fresh eyes, I'd say you lost a lot of detail in the (now black) woods and the waterfall sunk into the rock.

No matter what I did that car wanted to stay lavender or turn blue. It could have been blue. All the white/black/gray references turned the picture chartreuse, but the car still wasn't gold. To my eye the trees still look green. Maybe difference in our screens.

What is "Lab?"

That's the issue with old film: the color layers are organic and deteriorate over time in a rather non-predictable way, depending on circumstances, like storage temperature.

As I have no idea what kind of film this was, and as the size of the originals is way too small, and JPEG is well known for making images as worse as it gets, there's no way for me to work on this in a regular way. However, I run a high end monitor, calibrated weekly, and I'm in the business of Photoshop since Photoshop became Adobe's …

For that matter: Lab ist L*a*b in Photoshop (look into the image::mode menu) terms. It's a color-model like RGB or CMYK, but with limitless colors, which helps a lot to recover old images.

But as I don't know if you even use Photoshop, I let the case rest, there are too many variables to come up with simple recipes.

We're nearing the end of the challenge, only one day left! So well done! All of you!

So, those of you who have made it all month, would you be interested in participating in an end contest? Just let me know and I'll set it up

Sure -- it would take another 30 days to get the same opportunity, right? Count me in, please.

LetItBeFun, I never implied that it was your monitor that was "off." Mine looks good to me, but I can't tell if it is true. I can't afford full Photoshop for what is just a fun hobby, and haven't learned to use GIMP because my old PSE program does pretty much everything I want. After all, these are just old slides. This way we can look at them without a projector and screen, and nobody expects them to be perfect. Plus, I am learning more with each one, which was my other goal.

No interest in a contest.
