WHAT IS THIS ARENA ABOUT?
The Effects Contests are for artists who use photographs and photo-manipulation tools to create their images.

HOW DO I ENTER AN EFFECTS CONTEST ON DAGGER BAY?
  1. Create an account if you don’t have one yet
  2. Find a contest that you like that is open for entry.
  3. Read the contest rules and make sure your entry meets their requirements and does not break any rules (see the rules about what can't be used below)

CAN I ENTER ANY CONTEST?
Anyone at any skill level may enter Effects contests. However we will hold some contests suggested for Masters and others limited to Beginners. Check the rules posted for each individual contest to see if there are any restrictions.

DO MY CREATIONS STAY MINE AFTER I ENTER THEM?
Yes. Dagger Bay doesn't take away any of your rights to your art, you simply give Dagger Bay permission to display it.

WHAT CANNOT BE USED IN AN ENTRY?
  • Anything that is not safe for work. For example pornography, hate crimes, excessive gore.
  • Anything that is overtly political, religious or that would likely be offensive to the majority of people who view it.
  • The use of children in your images is not permitted unless you have a model release. If you are permitted to use the child / children in the image you must specifically state this in your comments.
  • Your image contains source material that you do not have a legal right to use. It’s your responsibility to determine if your source images are copyrighted. You must ask for permission from the copyright holder to use the image BEFORE submitting it to a contest and you must post a copyright release statement in your comments.
  • You cannot resubmit an image that has been used in any previous contest.
  • Your image cannot contain a signature or web address.
  • Any Norman Rockwell paintings, to do so will risk immediate disqualification.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU REALLY, REALLY DON'T WANT ME TO DO?
  • Don’t abuse program filters. Taking a photograph and adding a Photoshop mosaic filter doesn’t count. Also, every time you overuse the lens flare feature in Photoshop we make a kitten walk the plank.
  • Don’t take a fabulous image that somebody else has created, change a tiny bit of it and then submit it as your own work.
  • No montages.
  • No floating text (your image should do the talking!) and no cartoon speech / thought bubbles.
  • Don't add 2d cartoon elements to a photorealistic image.
  • Don't use gratuitous borders. A small border of a few pixels in width is fine. A big border in purple polka dots that dominates the image is not.
  • Use good quality sources. You won't get good results if you start with low resolution / pixelated source images.
  • If an image is of seriously horrible quality we will remove your entry no matter how much we like you.

WHAT ABOUT ADDING DIGITAL PAINTING OR 3D IN MY ENTRIES?
Many of our Effects contests will require the image to be photo-realistic, but we'll also have some contests that will encourage the use of digital painting along with photo sources. The expectations will be posted in the rules for each contest. 3D images that are not copyrighted may be used in Effects entries but they must not be the majority of the image. We have a whole area on the site that's specifically for our 3D artists.

ARE THERE SIZE REQUIREMENTS?
Your image should be large enough for people to be able to see what you've done. Images that look more like thumbnails will be removed. Try to keep your entries around 1000 pixels wide for the best viewing.

IN ALL CASES THE DAGGERBAY QUARTERMASTERS HAVE THE FINAL SAY

VOTING SCALE
  1. An entry that is so awful it should probably not even be on the site.
  2. An entry that is pretty horrible. For example, sloppy masking or low resolution.
  3. An entry that is below average. It definitely needs that extra hour of work or thought. Easy things have been ignored.
  4. An entry that could have been good but falls a bit short.
  5. It’s average.
  6. Better than average.
  7. Great idea and execution. Much better than average.
  8. Terrific idea and execution and something that sets it apart from just being great.
  9. This is almost perfect. The idea and execution are fantastic and there is a special something that makes it really stand out.
  10. Wow! The execution is perfect and the idea behind it is brilliant. The best thing I’ve seen on the site in a while.
